CASE STUDY #1

UI/Ux

GUIDE for TV, Web series & Movies

INTRODUCTION

TV Guide makes decision making easier, faster and more informative, making it the best place to discover what to watch, where to watch, anytime, anywhere.

PROBLEM

Today, shows are about choice, and for most of the viewers, there are a lot more choices than ever before. TV is now being watched in more than one place and being offered by more than one provider, and while this abundance of media content is good, the fragmentation of various sources and media devices has made it increasingly complex for users to discover and manage the content they are interested in.

GOALS

As the density of the online content increases and consumers are overloaded with choices, the ability to find and access content across services is crucial to the success of the app. I based my designs to deliver upon the following key areas.

A search platform that unifies content from multiple services and streaming providers, providing a single point of entry to discover new content.

A watchlist that notifies users of any upcoming releases and content from services they are subscribed to, allowing curation of personalized content.

Offering users with smart recommendations that can be set manually or based on their preferences and watching habits, enabling tailored content consumption within the context of their lifestyle.

Offering details about the shows that interests them with an analytical comparison with similar shows of their choice and the freedom to share the shows on social media.

RESEARCH

OBSERVATION AND ASSUMPTION

By performing interviews, observation and assumptions, I learnt existing user behaviors for shows discovery and management. Also studied existing TV Guide market and user preferences for shows management.

People generally use some website or apps like netflix, hotstar etc for discovery and management of shows whereas some makes a mental note or sets a remainder alarm, to my surprise some even right them down in the to-do list or set DVR to record.

USER REVIEWS ON APP STORES

I also sifted through hundreds of reviews and comments left by users on Play Store. This was some crucial feedback that helped me identify various pain points and areas of improvement.

The digitization of TV has significantly changed viewing patterns, nature of content and its delivery. The interruptive ads of today have given way to more engaging content, as new technologies enable audiences to skip content that they don’t want to engage with.

however, still remain in linear form — including news, live sports and big events. Other than that, everything else is shifting to video-on-demand (VOD).

“People are easily influenced and are more dependent on their phones and social media”

USER PERSONA

Rhea, 25

Rhea aged 25, who loves watching movies and TV shows.

Rhea watches a few shows every day. However, at times she misses her favorite programs because she loses track of the timings.

Also, there are times when guests are visiting and they are not able to find any relevant movies or shows to watch.

EMPATHY MAPPING

  • After an hr. of gossip with her friends, realizes she missed her favorite show.
  • Quickly turns on the TV and watches the episode ending in disappointment.
  • Sets daily alarm in her phone for the show.
  • Decided to watch some other show or movie but was unable to decide what to watch.
  • Meanwhile, her aunt came to her place with the kids.
  • Unable to handle the kids, she decided to make them watch a movie.
  • Unable to find a perfect show for the kid’s age group.

IA & WIREFRAME

I sketched countless ideas and brainstormed various possibilities way to improve the experience with a minimal and pleasant look.

DARK COLOR SCHEME

Traditionally, TV Guide has been accustomed to lighter themes, primarily because most of the content resides on the web. I intentionally chose a dark theme for the app since our users tend to engage in the app much later in the day, and in free time when she is relaxing, and thus a brighter theme would have been too harsh on the eyes.
